Throughout her teaching career, Chelsea Buchanan has taught several courses, including biology, physical science, zoology, Earth and space science, a medical detectives course, and a STEM course called Future City. In addition, she has served as a math and science instructional coach to support teachers. As a science teacher at Calvert Academy, she knows her job is all about making a difference in the lives of her students.
“The most enjoyable part of my workday is working directly with my students,” she said. “I truly value the relationships built between students and teachers because learning (and teaching) is not always easy. However, I believe that if strong relationships are formed in education, when things get hard, students know that they are in a positive, safe environment that allows for vulnerability in the learning process.”
Born and raised in San Antonio, she moved to Alabama where she attended Troy University and decided to stay in the southeast region of the United States. Today, she remains in Alabama with her husband, Brett and their three children.
MORE ABOUT MRS. BUCHANAN
Favorites: My favorite type of food is Mexican food. There is not just one dish I enjoy. I enjoy it all! I listen to several different types of music, but I lean towards 90s music from a combination of genres. I love all things thriller, mystery, and action, so if a book or movie falls into any of those categories, there is a good chance that I will enjoy it! I love a good competition, so you can find the televisions in our house on some sort of sports network. All of our teams seem random, but all have family ties. Some of my favorites are the San Antonio Spurs, North Carolina Tar Heels, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Atlanta Braves!
Three words to describe herself: Tenacious, analytical, and enthusiastic
Alternative career choice: I would want to become a veterinarian. I love animals but I am highly allergic to cats.
Most treasured possession: My most treasured possession(s) are my children, of course, but my most non-living treasured possession would be an old wooden piece that my grandfather and I referred to as “the magic.” It is just a small toy that makes it seem as if a ball disappears from a little cup before your eyes. My grandfather had me convinced that he was a magician when I was young, and it is a small piece of my childhood that will always remind me of him.
Bucket list item: One activity that remains on the top of my bucket list is walking the Great Wall of China.
Person she’d most like to meet: If I could meet anyone, I would want to meet J.K. Rowling. I would simply like to hear “her” story. She has done plenty of interviews, but I would thoroughly enjoy hearing her speak. I just feel that she has and continues to provide an abundance of inspiration to so many!
Unknown gem: I am unusually good at playing ping pong.
